When you own a company, or you are a supervisor over several people, you should consider appreciation plaques as a way of showing your respect for a job well done. There are many types of workers, and the ones who do a good job should be rewarded for that.
It is a good practice to show praise where it is due. Some supervisors and managers never received praise at any of their jobs. They should know better than anybody that this is a needed expression in the workplace.
When you show your gratitude for a job well done, you will see that it keeps coming back. You will feel good about yourself, as well as feeling that the worker knows you like what he is doing. That worker will continue to be outstanding. And you may have to purchase more plaques, but it is a very small price to pay when someone is working far beyond your expectations, and in fact, making the company and your department look good.
There are seminars that teach that some sort of praise in the workplace is better than raises in salaries. Money will always be the thing that the worker will say they desire most. They really think that it is the most important thing and the reason that they work in the first place. And raises should, of course, be given at certain intervals. But the act of praising someone for doing the job right, doing it well, and being there to do it, lasts far longer than a percentage raise.
Money is so fleeting. If you give a raise, that extra money in their paychecks is spent so quickly. They feel like they deserve it, and they do. So they go out to dinner and blow the extra, or use it for something else. Whatever they use it for, it is used up. And that Monday they need to start again to get some extra money, which will also slip through the fingers. A tangible gift of appreciation is something they can keep.
The plaque, certificate, or trophy can be for anything from the most widgets produced, or other type of production award, to an outstanding attendance record. In fact, if your worker is there every day without fail, you will save so much in sick pay that it makes sense to give them something for just being there.
There are congeniality awards, and awards for going above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to so many things in the workplace. These acts should be addressed and commented on. And if the employee has a small plaque that he can bring home and show his family, it is a feeling that he has done well. He can feel good about himself, no matter how menial the position.
To take it to another level, you may want to make a periodic ceremony out of it. If the employees have to actually come forth in front of everyone else to receive the appreciation plaques, this shows the other employees that they are special, and they may all try a little harder in the future to be one of the recipients of these very special plaques.
