You may not know what abseil window cleaners are but most people have seen them. Working on windows sometimes hundreds of feet in the air, these cleaners take their lives in their hands. They spend their days dangling in the air removing dust, dirt and other things from windows of high rises and other tall buildings.

There are two main challenges which confront most abseil window cleaners. They are: how to reach these high windows, and how to safely remain attached to the building while they are cleaning it. There are a number of different pieces of specialized equipment that they use to accomplish this.

You can expect to use everything from a cherry picker to a crane to clean the exterior of buildings. There are some buildings which are so high that even a crane will not work. If the building is very high or the space you are working in is very crowded you may find that using a crane is not possible.

There are also bosun's chairs and cable platforms that you can use to lower yourself down from the roof of a building. They enable you to clean windows that are too high even for a crane or cherry picker to reach. Safety harness is critical with these since winds can be very strong on the upper stories of buildings and the last thing you want is to be thrown off of your platform by a gust of wind.

Abseil window cleaners need nerves of steel in order to be able to get up on tall buildings and clean the windows, especially when the winds are strong or the weather is not the best. They may also clean other surfaces on the outside of the building, including stone and brick exteriors. If you are interested in getting involved in an exciting career, you should be someone who is not afraid of heights, who can handle equipment such as scaffolding and lifting equipment, and who is able to do physical labor.

If you want to start working in the industry, it may be a good idea to work for an already established window cleaning company. You want to make sure that you understand the job and the equipment that is required before branching out on your own.
