Accountancy opens the door to a variety of fields such as financial management, tax consultancy, auditing, management consultancy and secretarial services. Accountants work in all business sectors such as public sector, private sector, commerce and, of course, banking.

There are a number of designated qualifications offered by specialised accountancy bodies which can add an enormous amount of prospects to an aspiring accountant's career. Universities and selected colleges offer these qualifications. And some of these qualifications are even recognised globally such as the ACCA, CIMA and the IAEW.

Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) The holy grail of professional accountancy qualifications, the ACCA now sees examination centres in over 10 countries where accountancy students can take their exam, available to sit every June and December. There is also an option to obtain a dual-qualification: both the ACCA and a BA (Hons) in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University.

Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) With over 50 centres globally, CIMA has taken huge strides since its birth way back in 1919. It is now the world's number one management accountancy body. Their fifteen exam papers comprise four levels: TOPCIMA, Strategic, Managerial and Certificate.

There is a varied menu of options available to prospective students wishing to further their accountancy career. Whether the student wishes to study part-time, full-time, by day release, distance earning, home study, by correspondence, or even take a combination of these options, all are open to him. Many universities are now offering professional accountancy qualifications such as the ACCA and CIMA. Students also have the option of taking a degree at an eminent university and then applying to be exempt from certain selected exam papers.
