When we talk about property, it is not only the tangible things such as homes, structures, vehicles, money etc that are protected by law. There are other kinds of property too which are provided for by law and protected within the legal framework and these are called intellectual property, which can be protected against infringement. There are three main kinds of property which come under this classification: patents, trademarks and copyrights.

Copyright is an intellectual property right that is given by law to an author or any other kind of creator for a unique composition or creation. Copyright safeguards all types of artistic expressions including melodies, films, videos, designs etc in addition to original writings. Under copyright law, the owner of the work gets several rights which include financial rights to income arising from the work and acknowledgement as sole owner of that work.

Trademarks in contrast are intellectual property that pertains to protection accorded to certain words, graphical representations and other marks that differentiate the origin of one item from the other. Trademark protection gives the owner complete safety from unscrupulous use of his own symbol by others to mislead consumers.

The third type of intellectual property right, known as patent, protects the rights of inventors in their novel and beneficial invention. A patent is valid for a specified span and gives the holder exclusive right to use and sell his or her invention.

Some other, less commonly enforced intellectual property rights are also provided for by the law. To give some examples of these rare intellectual properties, they can be some traditional understanding carried forward by a particular family only; company secrets like recipes behind popular products; and location based symbols or marks to refer to a product arising from that place, like Champagne.

Though these types of intellectual property are distinct from each other there are certain commonalities between the three. All of these are protected within the legal framework and the rightful holders can take refuge in a court of law and claim reparation in case of any infringement.
