Most people are somewhat fearful of all things associated with death. Nonetheless, with no undertakers, the responsibility of laying our dearly departed to rest would be a very difficult task indeed. What are the requisites to become a successful undertaker? Below are the attributes and capabilities essential in a good undertaker.

Arranging and organising activities related to funerals are usually taken care of by undertakers, who are also known as funeral directors. To achieve success in this profession the undertaker carrying out these duties must possess certain essential and unique skills and attributes.

An undertaker must be energetic and be ready to work at odd hours, as he should be on call 24 hours a day. He must be prepared to spend most of his time outside because of the unique nature of the task.

An undertaker must be an excellent communicator and a good listener. He should be able to handle and interact with people of different age groups and people having various religious and cultural backgrounds. Understanding and compassion will be of great importance in the course of his job. But he will have to offer support to the grieving family and must remain strong and mentally detached to be able to do so.

As an undertaker, an individual must project a dignified and calm personality, while taking care that his disposition doesn't heighten the sorrow of the bereaved family members and friends.

By nature, undertakers must be broad minded. They should be willing to honour the faith and beliefs of all communities and should be knowledgeable in this area. As different people follow various funeral rites and methods, it is better to have understanding of these.

Excellent management and the power to organise are essential skills an undertaker should possess. He must also have leadership abilities and must be able to coordinate with a large number of people - from the clergy members to the flower seller.

Legal procedures and other formalities to be followed in the event of a death must be known to the undertaker who will have to receive required approvals etc for the funeral proceedings and other related matters. He will have to be fully conscious of procedures to be followed with respect to collecting death certificates or claims for insurance.

Lastly, an undertaker must ensure that his driver's license is regularly updated and that he can drive the hearse or funeral limousines during the ceremony.
