If you've been thinking about getting into poultry farming, you may want to consider raising ducks. There are many different breeds to choose from and resources available to tell you how. Here are few suggestions to get you started.

Probably one of the first steps is to do some research into the types of ducks available for breeding. That way you can decide whether you want to raise them for meat or as pets.

Some ducks are bred mostly as pets or recreational purposes. They may be entered in poultry contests or sold to municipalities for their park ponds. Different varieties are intended to be sold for meat, so they are fed a diet that will increase their size.

Other varieties are prized for their eggs or their self-sufficiency, which allows farmers to concentrate on other aspects of their operation.

The way you raise ducks can depend on how much land you have devoted to the enterprise. A large backyard is helpful to accommodate duck coops and should be fenced to prevent predators from snatching your birds.

You may want to start raising the birds when they are still ducklings. They are easy to care for but a quite a bit of work is required. It doesn't take long to get the hang of it, though.

When they are babies you can learn what types of food they eat, how to clean their coops and what temperatures are best for them. It may be harder to jump into the duck business starting with an adolescent or adult ducks.

The good news is that at about six months your ducks should begin laying eggs. Some ducks are better at laying eggs than others. A productive duck may lay as at least one egg a day. That should get you on your way to making some money on the endeavor.
