The Islamic religious belief views the body as a sacred temple, thence, Islam worshippers do not take in food and substances which they believe can harm their bodies. These foods are called haram or forbidden. Examples of haram foods are pork, blood, meat from a dead animal, meat from an animal who was slaughtered rather viciously, and all kinds of food where the name of Allah was not remarked during the preparation and before partaking. Alcohol is also a strictly prohibited substance. Outside these food items, Islam worshippers consume the halal foods, or those which are permitted.

Islam worshippers are also big eaters, and for their cravings, halal eating places offer up foods that are certified haram-free and that have been prepared using halal functions. This signifies, that the dish does not contain even the smallest haram ingredient, and that all the meat ingredients on the dish have come from animals which were killed swiftly while naming Allah so as not to let the animal suffer long. Aside from not having blood, pork, and all of the substances explicitly described as haram, the cooking utensils used for halal foods are not blended with those that are not halal.

It is a frequent notion that halal foods are accessible only for main dishes. But what is a meal without a rich dessert? Halal cakes are the answer. And they can come in assortment of flavours which everyone loves: chocolate cakes, custard cakes, pies, and tarts, and muffins. What makes these cakes halal is the absence of alcohol content. Many bakers apply alcohol to impart a clear taste and aroma to a dessert. But halal cakes have not a single drop of alcohol.

But this is not to say that halal cakes are bland and lacking in savour. To substitute alcohol, they are baked using heartier fruit-based alternatives like apple juice, or vanilla extract that is perfectly alcohol-free. Solid fat is also employed in baking, and so halal cakes are baked with fruit-based solid fats that work well even for deep brown chocolate cakes.

Shortenings may also be based on haram ingredients, and so to replace these, there are better and healthier options like apple sauce, pureed prunes, and apple butter. Especially delightful for pies.
